History:

The communities of this metropolitan area began its settlement in the late 1700’s, but its industrial history didn’t begin until the early 1800’s with the production of iron, and quickly followed by the steel industry in the 1890’s. These industrial companies played a huge role in providing materials during both world wars and due to this demand, people flocked to the counties in the pursuit of jobs. During the 1970’s, those booming businesses and communities came to a halt with the coming of the steel crisis. Thousands lost their jobs during this period and the area came to be a part of “The Rust Belt”. Now, those industries have been replaced with scrap metal yards and aluminum plants. The Mahoning County has made great strides towards the revitalization of the area and has succeeded in its past and current efforts to retain and attract new businesses, as well as a strong sense of community.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2018, the estimated population in the metropolitan area of Mahoning county is 541,926.
